It seems I was attacked by a "rogue security program" and my VIPRE stopped it. It claimed to be windows security notice of some kind saying I was infected with Trojan horses and I needed to download a windows security program. At first I almost thought it was legit - it was rather alarming as it started flashing all kinds of warnings and 100's of worms and Trojan horses infecting my hard drive. It started automatically downloading something claiming to be a security program to clean it up, but the VIPRE wouldn't allow it. It said I needed to "close all programs and turn off my antivirus programs" in order for it to download - I opted not to do this, since my VIPRE said it was "known rogue security program". I got the task manager to get rid of the rogue windows and now everything seems OK. -- N.E.
